For Lotto, you need to choose six numbers from 1 to 59. If all the numbers match the six main numbers then you win the jackpot. A seventh number is here also which is called as "Bonus Ball" is also drawn, but this is not held on your ticket.
If you have matched five numbers of the six main numbers then the Bonus ball comes in the role. It is intended to provide you an additional chance to match the remaining number on your ticket and if that matches then you will win a better prize. Any number on your ticket can be used to match the Bonus Ball but as you know it comes in play when you have 5 main numbers match.
You don't need to choose the seventh number on your ticket as the Bonus Ball is picked from the remaining 53 numbers in the machine after the six main numbers have been picked. Multiple occurrences of the same number are not possible.
The Bonus Ball provides you a possibility to grow the size of your prize if you miss out the jackpot prize by a single number. Here is an example of how it works:
The Bonus Ball only comes into play if you have matched 5 main numbers. There is any additiona prize for 'Match 4 + Bonus', 'Match 3 + Bonus, and so on.
